“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, he was hurled into the lake of fire.”
Revelation 20 : 15
Only 32% of people believe that hell is a physical place of torment and suffering where people’s souls go to after death according to Barna research in 2007. This fluctuates year to year, but as we discussed in Day 13, if you don’t believe that something exists has absolutely no bearing on whether it does or does not and your ignorance to it existing could bring you great harm.
There were a great many articles emphatically claiming there is no hell and if there is one, then they don’t want to know a God that would send people there. Here is a glimpse at just one who calls himself a “Spiritual Teacher.”
“Well, all I’ve got to say is this: If Jesus does not want to go through it again, I understand. But I am here-and-now declaring, and I don’t think I would be alone in this:
“God, allow me to exchange places, please, because, if You’re expecting me to be happy floating around in heaven on a cloud singing hymns about your compassion and grace and love all day long, knowing some of my friends and others are suffering in hell…You’re wrong. You’re dead wrong. In fact, Your heaven has just become my hell!”
“Surprised are you, God?”
“Well, don’t be!”” from The Huffington Post written by Steve McSwain
We don’t have the knowledge, the understanding, the capacity to equate our mortal minds with God.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.” Isaiah 55 : 8
When we attempt to, we are likely to make fools of ourselves.
How great are your works, Lord,
how profound your thoughts!
Senseless people do not know,
fools do not understand,
that though the wicked spring up like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they will be destroyed forever.” Psalm 92 : 5 – 7
When we attempt to figure God out and come up with beliefs that are contrary to His Word, we are doing the work of Satan. God will not be mocked.
“For if God did not [even] spare angels that sinned, but threw them into hell and sent them to pits of gloom to be kept [there] for judgment; and if He did not spare the ancient world, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought [the judgment of] a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; 2 Peter 2 : 4 – 6
Many people, even Christian leaders, have been quoted to say there is more than one way to heaven.
“Jesus said to him, “I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” John 14 : 6
I would encourage you to read the entire story from Luke 16:19 -31, but the end of the story is the reason it is so important that we not allow false teachings to make us go against what the Bible clearly says is a physical place.
“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
“‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’” Luke 14 : 27 – 31
Do you have a fear of Judgement Day?
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day [when I judge them], ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, and driven out demons in Your name, and done many miracles in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them publicly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me [you are banished from My presence], you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands].’” Matthew 7 : 21 – 23
Have you done things that make you wonder if God has forgiven you? I have read some commentary that say that
“a deathbed repentance and absolution is a lie palmed off by Satan.” John W Ritenbaugh
I am no theologian or Bible commentator, I am no different than anyone reading this devotion. But when I read something that goes against Scripture that says:
“for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10 : 13
I have to question it. There are many places in Scripture that say just believe in the Lord Jesus and be saved. But the one that speaks directly to what the author above states is this one. While hanging on the cross next to Jesus, the thief says:
He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?”
The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden. But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’”
“No! You will not die,” the serpent said to the woman. “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” Genesis 3 : 1 – 6
Adam and Eve walked with God but fell for the lie. We need to be always alert to truth and guard ourselves from taking God too lightly. Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden never to return again. Thankfully, that was not the end of that story. We have a God Who loves us and wants us again to walk with Him.
“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3 : 17
