I had never had a weight problem growing up. I ate whatever I wanted and was a normal weight for my height.
When I married I was 118 lbs at 5’5″, I was 21 years old. By the time I was pregnant five years later, I was 125 lbs. Hmmm was the metabolism already slowing down?
After my second baby had been delivered, I don’t know how long after I had not dropped back down and found myself weighing 130 lbs. I cried and cried. Now I wish I weighed 130 lbs, but then it was reaching a new level. In my mind 130 lbs was into a set of numbers I never wanted to enter! I asked my husband about going to a weight loss center. At the time there was Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. I still remember where I was in my home making the phone call. It was the hardest thing I ever did at that time and literally cried as I talked on the phone, I was so ashamed at my weight.
The crazy thing is, I only had 5 – 10 lbs to lose. Today that seems like no big deal, but having never had a weight issue before I had no idea how difficult or simple it would be to lose the weight. When I went to the meetings..because back then it was required, all I heard was how these people were cheating. I was appalled. We didn’t have a lot of money and this program was a huge sacrifice for us to do. There was no way I could cheat, that would be wasting our money! But again, within a month I had reached my goal and perhaps these other folks had a long term program and were struggling with it.
Unfortunately that was the beginning of a life-long yo-yo diet issue. I had another baby so I gained more weight. I got it off and was fine for a time.
Each decade was like adding another 10 lbs at which I leveled off at.
In my late 30s I tried Atkins and was very successful with that until I lost a job and ate my emotions into another level of weight.
Over the years I tried them all, Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig (I’m a lifetime member), LA weightloss, and on and on.
About 3 years ago I began hearing a commercial on the radio about Take Shape For Life which is a program using the food of Medifast. I had heard of Medifast from my years in Nursing School…it was that old. I just never considered it because I assumed it was like Slimfast (which I also tried back when it worked for Oprah…the first time). However, it was not an all liquid diet.
But the biggest thing that attracted me to it was that I could order GLUTEN FREE products. That was the big disadvantage to the other food replacement programs. They were filled with bread products and pasta and I had found out over the years that I was a gluten sensitive. While not Celiac Disease, a Gluten sensitive actually can have far more damage internally because it affects so many areas. I lived in a place of chronic inflammation and swelling when on wheat products.
So, several years ago I once more tried to lose weight.
I ordered the Medifast through Take Shape For Life. When my first food box came I was scared to death at the prospect of this working. There was a bag the size of chip bag that contained cereal or cheese balls…it was my whole meal! I only got 5 of the meals per day and was allowed one meal on my own that was to be lean and green.
The first tastes of the cereal were kind of metallic tasting and it took me two hours to eat the bag. That certainly helped because I was to eat every 2 1/2 hours so it was almost time to eat something again!
I know it took several days to get in the place where it was super easy. But it happened. All cravings for sugar GONE. All cravings for carbs GONE. I actually love the food now.
They ask you not to weigh yourself for at least two weeks. That is kind of hard to do but I managed. After two weeks I had lost 7 lbs. That is a great incentive, I have to say.
For me this was a fairly easy eating routine because it is based very similarly to Atkins. High Protien, Low Carb. I enjoyed steak, ribs, chick, pork loin, turkey, eggs, bacon, sausage, salmon, and any other meat or fish I could cook or purchase at a restaurant. I accompanied the protein with salads, broccoli, zucchini, green beans, cabbage and other non-starchy vegetables.
I started in March and by May I was just starting to get into Misses size 4 clothes. I never have worn a size 4 in my life.
I had a goal and that was to get to 130 lbs by our anniversary trip to St. Thomas that summer. I didn’t get to that. I got to 138 lbs and felt like I was as small as I should get. Some of my size 4s hung on me and I had bought a few size 2s.
Let me tell you it takes a while to know it is you when you look in the mirror.
When I awoke in the morning, I would be surprised to feel my abdomen and waist. I had never looked this great in my adult life because it was fat that I lost and I had a very lean body.
My doctor could not believe it and my labs though always healthy had gotten even more incredible as far as cholesterol goes.
I determined that I would remove all of my size 10s and size 8s from my closet. I lost weight so fast that I never had any size 6s. It did cost a small fortune to buy a whole new wardrobe. Even my size Medium tops hung on me and had to go.
I recently had surgery and was encouraged to eat and have put on some weight again. But I have no concern that it will come off easily as I am back to my program until I can get back on to maintenance again.
Take Shape for Life has as much or as little support as you need. I became a Health Coach for them so that I too can offer the support I received and encourage others who wish to become more healthy through weight loss.
Medifast has been the number one recommended weight loss program by doctors for years. Each meal contains 25 vitamins and minerals. It is recommended for Diabetics too.
One of the great advantages of this program over others besides offering gluten free and being very portable and healthy is that you can become a health coach and in doing so the company gives you a commission on foods purchased by your clients. It does not cost them any extra it is just part of their program. They want people helping people rather than a corporate answering service. This can help pay for your own food and if you get enough clients, you can actually earn a great income! I got my husband to join…we went to St. Thomas both in great shape! I also have had some other friends join.
