Will It Ever Happen?
Do you remember the guy in Rudolph who came along and saved Hermie and Rudolph? Yukon Cornelias was his name.
Well, as I impatiently wait for my first Amazon sale, I log in and go to earnings and see the clicks and the conversion rate which seems fairly high at 75%. Then I slide over to earnings and it sits unchanged at a big fat zero.
Then, like Yukon, as he tastes his pick axe, to determine if he has found gold, I say under my breath…”nothin’.”
You see, Amazon just allowed my state to participate in their associate program. What that means is, if you or anyone uses one of my affiliate links, which are often photos of products that take you to Amazon, and you end up purchasing from them within 24 hours, I get paid. You paid nothing extra for your item, I got a commission. You don’t even have to purchase the item you clicked on. They track your entry point and if it is from me, any purchases you make in the next 24 hours will get attributed to me.
Well, I got a notice from them yesterday that I only had 90 days left to get a sale or I would get deactivated. That was a little crazy because I only applied 8 days ago and I was supposed to have 180 days to get a sale. But whatever, it put a fire under me to really get busy putting out content that had links to them. UPDATE: Before this went to publication, I had the joy of speaking with someone at Amazon who represents the Associate Program. Apparently, I had already applied and this was the notice from the one I had not acted on. But regardless, I need a sale!
Thus the reason I am checking so frequently.
This post will contain affiliate links. Of course it does!
Who Are Bloggers Anyway?
I am writing this for the new or not so new blogger who is working feverishly to get an income from their hard working blogs.
People on television often chide and make fun of bloggers, as if we are all in our mid 20s sitting in our parent’s basements in our pjs. Let me tell you something, my neighbor’s son is doing just that and he quit a job at Amazon because he was making more money with his youtube channel. So laugh all they may, this can be a very lucrative business.
Forbes released an article this past May highlighting the top 10 most lucrative blogs today. They earn well above $100, 000.000 per MONTH! Seriously, the top blog on the list was earning $14 Million a Month. So who is the joke on really?
We come from every gender, age and ethnicity and we are boldly shaking off the cliche’ we have been anointed with, to silently work behind the scenes creating a world and business we love. We understand social media, are internet savvy, have coding knowledge, understand basic SEO and have become great at creating graphics and editing photos. We educate ourselves constantly and we are not afraid of a challenge. We don’t need the pat on the back from a coworker, or the “well done” from the boss. We are the boss. If want it, we work for it and we will believe in ourselves when no one else will. We are bloggers!
So just want to lay that myth to rest.
I Just Don’t Get It, Why Blog?
Blogging is hard work.
You put in hours and hours seated at your laptop. You are networking constantly, writing content, creating graphics, staying educated on the latest in social media, editing, SEO and on and on.
This is a job and most of us are self-employed volunteers actually paying to have this dream. Doesn’t sound like a dream? Well for the blogger who is passionate about their subject, it really is.
There are people in the world interested in everything. The internet is saturated with information and when we get to be a part of it with no one saying…sorry, you aren’t qualified, you’re too young, you’re too old, you don’t have enough experience, you have too much experience, you aren’t a good cultural fit…come on! We get to be our true selves or our fake selves and write and interact with the world and no one can tell us “No, you can’t.”
If we are creative enough to make a product, we may break out big time with an e-book or course. But there are those who simply utilize the affiliate programs available and build a huge following and make enough money to quit their day jobs as lawyers and such. Yes, you can really make it as a blogger.
Don’t Give Up on The Dream
This week I have made less than $5. I have spent hours and hours on line creating content and trying to work my affiliates to my advantage. Why am I not discouraged? Because every day I have made some money. I know that means I am going to grow if I just don’t quit and give up. I actually get excited at every 10 cents I earn!!!
I could probably make more money walking through Grand Central Station picking up lose change and pennies at this time. But that is not my dream.
Here’s the thing, according to that same Forbes’ article, there are more than 1000 websites started every minute of every day. Of course not all of them are blogs, but the point is most people don’t follow through. They stop, quit, give in, give up. My story? This is my 3rd or 4th attempt and I nearly gave up a few months ago. But I realized I was born to do this and if I quit now, I will end up starting up again next January having lost all that I had already built up and achieved.
Imagine if I had never quit the first time? That will stop you from quitting right there.
So if you are out there, like me, waiting and watching, hoping and praying…don’t do it, don’t quit. You stick with it and 5 years from now you will be living your dream. I believe it. Let’s check back in 2022 and see where we all are.
I am supposed to be officially retired by then, so if this works, I will be living the good life on the lake and enjoying my family and a boat I don’t yet own and a home I have not built!
What is your dream?
