If you knew you had a secret weapon to battle just about anything coming against you , would you use it? I am not talking about a weapon that harms anyone.
When we get terrible news….about our job, about taxes, about our health or the health of a loved one, when there isn’t enough money to pay all of the bills, what do you do?
I know it affects my emotions. I always try my best to see the bigger picture and look at the bright side of things, but often when these type of things happen, they come in waves. You know the old expression, “it was the last straw” or “the straw that broke the camels back” ? I do okay for the first one and even the second, but by the time the third thing is coming at me I start to crack. The sunny side of the street starts to look a little more like the dark clouds of a tornado approaching.
I complain. I talk about it almost non-stop. It won’t leave my mind. I try to think about what I could have done differently that may have prevented it. I try to plan my actions to resolve it. I want it to go away!
What if you were in that state of mind and someone told you that you could actually break out of it? Would you give it a try? Would you be willing to do almost anything as long as it was not morally wrong or outrageous?
Paul and Silas were preachers of the Gospel. They were beaten and imprisoned. They were held in stocks.
“Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.” Acts 16 : 24 -26
In this case, there was no angel that came to them or the Lord did not speak to them and tell them, if you worship Me, I will deliver you. They were just hanging in the stocks in the prison and began to worship the Lord. It does say they were praying but does not say what they were praying so maybe they asked to be delivered. What is revealed is that they were singing hymns, then suddenly and miraculously, they were free.
Again, I ask you if there was something horrible happening that threatened your very life and you knew God had told you not to do what was normally done….would you be able to trust that or would you question Him and do it your way?
“This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” 2 Chronicles 20 : 15
” You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’” 2 Chronicles 20 : 17
Most of us have not seen war face to face. We have not had to come against an army, but try to imagine it. This people sought God’s advice, cried out to Him to save them because they knew in their own strength they would not be able to defeat the army coming against them. His response was, take your positions, stand firm and see the deliverance of the Lord. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged. Go face your enemy and the Lord will be with you.
So what army are you facing in your life? What battles are you facing? Have you consulted the Lord on what you should do?
Without hesitation Jehoshaphat and his people determined to do what the Lord had told them. They even decided to do something else that would not make much sense in a battle strategy.
“After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:
“Give thanks to the Lord,
for his love endures forever.” ” 2 Chronicles 20 : 21
The army goes marching towards their enemy. An enemy far too vast for them to conquer. Realize God did not tell them to stay put, to hide and to wait. He basically said “Charge!” But don’t do anything because you won’t have to fight this battle.
The front line is men singing and praising God for the splendor of His holiness. No swords or stones. Only the simple words, “Give thanks to the Lord for His love endures forever.”
I can’t imagine it. Have you ever tried to worship God in response to your battle? You get bad news and your response is to sing and praise and be thankful to God.
“As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.” 2 Chronicles 20 : 22
“So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped.” 2 Chronicles 20 : 24
God was and is faithful to His Word. The people did not have to fight the battle, they worshipped God and not one survived that came against them.
In Psalms it says that God is enthroned in our praises. Some translate that to say He inhabits them. If you are worshipping God, you are drawing near to Him. James writes “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
I can testify myself that I have tried it. Worship changes the atmosphere. We talked in Day 4 about the Power of Words. Words carry out a purpose. When our mouths sing or speak words of praise and worship they are a weapon against the power of the enemy. Hymns and Praise are typically written using Scripture for their inspiration and as we memorized Ephesians 6 : 13 – 18 in Day 13, the Word of God ( the Bible) is the Sword of the Spirit. It actually is a spiritual weapon that we are to wield against any situation that comes against us.
“be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Ephesians 5 : 19 – 20
We have been give a secret weapon to fight against our depression, anxiety, cancer, financial situation, job loss….whatever you are going through, there is nothing outside of God’s ability to change the circumstance…NOTHING. With faith you trust and lift up a song of praise to Him with thanksgiving. We are mortal, we all will pass from this earthly body. I am not pretending that everyone will be healed forever here on this earth…for even Lazareth who Jesus raised from the dead still died again. But facing your battles head on with praise to God will give you the victory to walk the path you are to walk with faith and joy, knowing you are in His hands.
*What battles are you facing now?
*What have you tried so far to work against them?
*Are you willing to try worshipping God in the midst of your battle?
*I would just challenge you to put on some worship music and if you know it sing it, if you don’t try to learn it as it plays. I highly recommend turning on YouTube on your TV if you can or else on your computer and play some of the worship mixes…some are several hours. Keep it playing in the background while you are working, if it is really bad…leave it on during your sleep.
Lord, You are our healer, our defender, our refuge, our provider…Your Word will not fail. Whatever our circumstance, we will trust You. Help us to remember that in all things we are to give You thanks, that You want us to delight in Your presence and sing Your praise. Move us to take our eyes off of our situations and lift them to you. Change our focus to know our place in Your kingdom and let us respond as Your children worshipping and loving You and delighting in You. With a peace that comes from You alone, in Jesus Name, Amen.
Please know that I do not take any circumstance lightly. I have seen God work miracles in my life, in my family’s lives. I know that God’s Word is a weapon and when we sing it, it works like no other weapon on earth. I pray that you use this secret weapon against every battle you face.
